I'm using an AEM EMS (standalone) on my Miata and a Greddy eManage Ultimate on my Z32. So far the AEM is a lot easier for me to use.
Given the amount of tunability I was doing a standalone seemed better for the Miata (non-turbo to turbo, MAF to MAP, wasted spark dual coil to sequential COP and a whole lotta pressure...). The Z32 is going to be less drastic so a piggy back seemed adequate.
I think you will be happy with the AEM, if for no other reason than the fact that they have awesome tech support and great product support. Greddy, on the other hand, doesn't seem to have any support whatsoever but the piggy back scheme is generally pretty simple.
