Nothing like a standard gas motor... take the lexus GS450h for instance... it is the same engine as the GS350. BUT, on top of that, it adds about 150 horsepower electric motors and lots of torque at 0rpm. The CVT keeps it in the powerband at all speeds if you put it to the floor... The hybrid has more power than the Gas engine counterpart... All the lexus hybrids are performance hybrids, better gas mileage is just a side effect.

The suv, the RX400h, is the same engine as an RX330, but has front and rear
electric motors and a CVT. The rear motor/generator gives it on demand awd, and extra power for acceleration... for instance, the awd hybrid 0-60 is faster than the 2wd.

...driving a hybrid is nothing like driving a gas motor, takes a while to get used to feeling like the trans is slipping all the time... but they are actually the simplest transmissions when you take them apart. No friction plates, no bands, no clutches, no solenoids, no valve body, no manual valve.
