Angry 1989 Porsche 944 turbo failure (I think?)

My 1989 944 turbo recently suffered a manifold gasket leak on #2 cyclinder which was repaired. After picking up the car, the mechanic mentioned that my turbo was noisey and seemed out of balance. After driving it, I noticed a whirring sound and no boost. Prior to this, it had been working just fine. Another Porsche mechanic told me that I had probably damaged the exhaust turbine wheel and it was now rubbing against the housing. The turbo is a KKK k-26/8 and has done only 160,000 kms. Does this sound right?:

Pretty tough to say what happened. It's possible that a part of the exhaust gasket came loose as a result of the leak and hit the turbine. Alternately, it could be possible that the mechanic left/lost something in the exhaust tract when he fixed the gasket and it hit the turbine and the mechanic is just backtracking to cover his ass. Trouble is that it's virtually impossible to prove it even if that was the case. Best bet is to pull it and have it rebuilt. G-popshop does a lot of work on BW/KKK stuff. Call and ask for Gerry, he's a really good guy and a straight shooter.
