Area HKS
Spanning for over a quarter-century, import enthusiasts have grown to love and respect the three-letter acronym known as HKS. In October 1973, two passionate engineers Hiroyuki Hasegawa, a former engineer for Yamaha Motor Company, and his partner Mr. Kitagawa, conceptualized an idea of building a company dedicated to designing and building high-performance engines and aftermarket components-products not offered by the major OE manufactures such as Datsun or Toyota. Obtaining financial funding and a partnership with Sigma Automotive Co., Ltd., the two man team, including their backers, better known as HKS (Hasegawa, Kitagawa, and Sigma), began their engine tuning within the confines of a dairy-farm shed at the base of Mount Fuji. History recorded that Mr. Hasegawa was the pioneer who designed and built the first aftermarket turbocharger for passenger cars, which propelled this small startup company to stardom within the high-performance market.
Thirty-two years have passed since the first tool was turned in that tiny dairy farm shed. Today, HKS headquarters resides in a 100,000 square foot, state-of-the-art manufacturing and R&D facility at the foot of Mount Fuji as their team of engineers put their products to the ultimate test in drag racing, road racing, rallying and top speed trials. Covering all aspects of motorsports takes a demanding toll on even a large powerhouse such as HKS. Rather than limiting themselves with only the corporate building in the Tokyo area, HKS addressed this dilemma by slowly branching out its locations to supply race dealerships and consumers with quality components.
HKS Technical Factory, a subdivision of HKS, opened their doors on January 24, 2003 to service customer's needs with professional tuning based around HKS performance parts. Located in Saitama, Japan, TF is integrated with HKS's Tokyo sales office, employing five mechanics/ engineers and nine sales staffers. Technical Factory offers a wide range of services for the auto enthusiast; from simple oil and filter changes to full chassis reinforcing, they can provide anything the customer needs. With a complete facility, the mechanics also have the ability to overhaul suspension as well as provide four-wheel alignment and corner balance any vehicle.
For customers who demand high performance engine upgrades they can go to TF knowing that the staff has the ability to dynotune and install superchargers and aftermarket turbo kits offered "off the shelf" by HKS. Using an in-house selection of AF640 or 700 meters, the Dynapack 5000 series four-wheel dyno ensures a vehicle can be fully tuned whether the upgrade is a GT3037 turbine or FCon V-Pro fuel computer. Walk-in customers who decide on purchasing an HKS exhaust have the comforts of knowing TF can perform a 95 dB sound check while monitoring for carbon monoxides and hydrocarbons, using their state-of-the-art test machine. During our photo shoot, we caught a glimpse of a Nissan Fuga (Infinity M45) in the building stages of receiving an HKS supercharger. Using a VQ35DE power plant, similar to the Nissan 350Z, the Fuga was set to use a F-CON SZ fuel management computer while boosting up power figures to 340ps at 6500rpm (.6kg of boost). Not too shabby for a luxury car.
Future plans for HKS Technical Factory include sales of complete vehicles packed with HKS goodies and professional installation. With the growing popularity of the import aftermarket scene, HKS TF aims to become a brand name product like AC Schnitzer, Lorinser, and Carlsson. Until that day finally arrives, customers can expect the finest in HKS quality parts sold, tested and installed under one roof.

Proudly displayed on the showroom floor is the Tsukuba Super Lap record holder TRB-02 Lancer Evolution. Laced in complete dry carbon, the EVO, piloted by Nobuteru Taniguchi, tracked its way into the record books with an impressive 54.739 seconds.
Sitting among a flood of HKS project cars sat the infamous HKS S15. Upon further inspection we found out this vehicle wasn't the authentic D1 Grand Prix drift vehicle campaigned by Nobuteru Taniguchi, rather this red clad monster was a exact replica of the real thing.
We captured one of the five HKS engineers/mechanics in the process of researching and developing the new HKS Rotrex Supercharger for the Nissan Fuga. This kit is labeled as producing 340ps at a mere .6 bar of boost pressure.
Customers are offered a unique opportunity to get hands on approach to each of the products.
